I had the honour to address to you

a Despatch No. 405, dated 29th. November, 1910, on the

subject of the amendment of the Companies Law, and on 26th.

ultimo I telegraphed to you to await a further Despatch,

pending the result of discussion with Sir H. de Saugmarez,

Judge of His Majesty's High Court, Shanghai, who was about

to pay me a visit. Sir Havilland has been with me since

December 26th. and he has taken the opportunity of dis-

-cussing very fully with the Attorney-General and with the

Honourable Mr. H. E. Pollock, K.C., (Unofficial Member of

Logislative Council) the difficulties raised by the recent

judgment of His Honour Sir F. Piggott regarding the

position of Shanghai Companies registered in Hongkong. I

have myself also had some conversation with Sir Havilland

on
